JOBERG - Hector Pieterson Museum
This museum honors Hector Pieterson - a teenager that was killed during, what started out to be, a peaceful walk from their highschool (in Soweto) to a larger meeting place (other groups were marching to from their schools) to protest the issue of Apartheid and the use of Afrikaans in the schools - and language learning practices that was hampering their chance for an equal education.

Hector Pieterson (1964 – 16 June 1976) became the iconic image of the 1976 Soweto uprising in apartheid South Africa when a news photograph by Sam Nzima of the dying Hector being carried by a fellow student, was published around the world. He was killed at the age of 12 when the police opened fire on protesting students. For years, June 16 stood as a symbol of resistance to the brutality of the apartheid government. Today, it is known as National Youth Day — a day on which South Africans honor young people and bring attention to their needs.[1].

JOBERG - South Africa Military Museum
Spent one morning going thru the South Africa Military Museum. The area had lost power a couple of hours earlier and we were able to get a reduced entry fee - as 2 of the buildings were quite dark; in fact, had to take pictures with the flash - then look in the view finder to see the displays!! They had a lot lot lot of items to see - not just from South Africa but also other counties......
